Blend
Grenache (100%), HILLTOPS
Season
Good rains through spring and a cool summer and autumn resulted in a long ripening period. The moderate conditions yielded disease-free fruit bursting with freshness.
Viticulture
Grown by the Mullany family in deep volcanic loam near Wombat, in the Hilltops, on a relatively elevated but warm north-facing site at 480m. The sloping block has North-South row orientation. The vines are spur-pruned and vertically shoot-positioned. The variety yields very generously – severe crop thinning is undertaken at veraison. The late-ripening Grenache is one of the last varieties harvested.
Winemaking
Pristine grapes were hand harvested in late March. A number of different ferments were undertaken, including some with carbonic maceration. After pressing, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in a mix of mainly older Allier barrels before bottling in October 2021.
Taste
Fresh raspberry, red licorice and spice aroma notes yield to a bright and succulent palate laced with cranberry, dark cherry and sugar plum. This medium-bodied wine has pleasing fine-grained tannins and finishes with juicy, mouth-watering acidity.
This wine is in a fantastic drinking spot right now.
94pts, James Suckling.
